The Kalk Bay Historical Association was founded in 1995. Our area of interest focuses on the villages of St. James and Kalk Bay, but incorporates the wider South Peninsula.

Our main aims are the preservation of documents, maps, plans and photographs recording the history of the area. We also have a keen interest in the preservation of buildings of historic interest in the area. The recording of oral histories forms part of our activities.

We arrange and host four talks of historic interest every year and these are subsequently published in our Bulletins.

Kalk Bay Historical Association

We have taken as our logo a modified version of the coat of arms of the Kalk Bay Muizenberg Municipality 1895 – 1913. Designed in 1907 by Frank S. Newman it was described in heraldic terms as:

Crest: The Imperial Lion proper guarding the anchor of Good Hope.

Escutcheon quartered in chief as follows –

1st – Vasco da Gama’s vessel the St Joseph (the first European ship to enter Table Bay) with the arms of the commander imposed in the dexter corner; 2nd Fleur de lys or semées (French v. sow or scattered) on a field azure (the arms of the Huguenots who settled in the vicinity of Muizenberg); the lower portion of the shield being charged with a bunch of grapes proper (an emblem of fertility) on a field purpure. On an in escutcheon is the Cape lily proper on a field gules. Motto ‘Spes Major’; Supporters 2 Mermen.

A copy of the original coat of arms from an unknown location is shown here:
