can supply me all the lime needed for the contract. I will take all you can deliver.”
Whaling
Abraham was granted fishing rights along Muizenberg beach by the Governor of the
Cape. When the building of the railway through Muizenberg impeded access to and
from the beach for the conveyance of fish and whale oil, he appealed to the Governor.
The situation was soon rectified and he was granted the right of an access road for his
enterprise.
Abraham’s children were successful in all their endeavours but it was his fourth child,
Abraham Zacharias, who was to be the spiritual heir of the family. (Fig. 5.7). It was
through Abraham, Apie, as he became known, that the Huguenot spirit of his father
Abraham, was continued. In the following whaling encounter his faith became evident
and was the means of the saving of the whole crew.
They that go down to the sea in ships
Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.
They saw the works of the Lord, His wonderful deeds in the deep.
For He spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their
courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits end.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He brought them out of their
distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm, and He guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds to the
children of men.
Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the
elders. —Psalm 107: 23—31
