GHOSTS
A Ghost Story from Kalk Bay
Judy Herbert
In the 1950s an aunt of mine and her family rented a house in St. John’s road. There
were two children in the family, both boys. The older one was seven and the younger
four.
My aunt put them to bed one night and asked “Shall I put out the light?” The younger
son said “No”, but the older one said “Yes, put it out because the old lady will come and
read to me.” My aunt asked “Which old lady?” and the boy replied “She’s all dressed in
black and sits on the end of my bed and reads to me”. The younger boy said “I never see
her!”
My aunt asked the owner whether she knew who the lady was and it turned out to be the
owner’s mother, who had dressed all in black and who had previously lived in the
house.
My cousin cannot to-day remember the incident at all, but my aunt at 84 still remembers
it vividly.
