regarded as “a great and Imperial service.” (L’Ange, 1991: 9). The Union cabinet agreed on
10 August to send an expedition to GSWA. On 4 September SA forces under Brig.-General
H. T. Lukin crossed the Orange River and started the invasion. With Lukin was local
Muizenberg resident, Sir Abe Bailey, who was Deputy Assistant Quarter-Master General
