Conclusion
Along the Muizenberg – St. James route small alterations occurred during subsequent
years: minor widenings – purchase of land after 29/4/1937 took place in Muizenberg
adjoining Mrs E McLean and Mr C Shapiro, and St. James Estate late Mr J E Orr and
Mrs E M Molteno. (Mayor’s Minute 1937). Much later, in 1988, there was a road-
widening into the old railway curve at Rhodes Cottage.
Apart from these changes, Main Road has remained unchanged for nearly 80 years –
though there are further widenings indicated on current town planning and zoning maps,
as well as proposed parking areas on areas that are currently green spaces.. Along The
Trappies promenade many of the attractive precast sections were knocked out by traffic
impacts, while the process of spalling rendered them unsafe by the 1960s. They were
replaced by an unattractive glazed brick wall with the associated loss of the cantilevered
seating places.
The current road works are necessary to replace the aged underground infrastructure
which has been failing intermittently during recent decades. (Fig. 2.60).
