This pool began as an illegal structure when Mr Steer of Douglas Cottage constructed a

sea-wall in 1903 to block off a small gully. He eventually entered into an arrangement
with the KB-MM and more formal walls were built in 1906. During 1914 the pool was

extended 20 ft. seawards, the existing walls were raised, and all rocks and sand were
removed from the interior, greatly deepening and improving it. (Fig. 1.46.)

Bathing boxes were built along the rail boundary to the south of the subway and also on
the north side of the pool. The maximum number was 16 and they served mainly the local

residents and hotels like Seahurst and Innisfail. Six new ones were added in 1940. It

remained like this until the late 1950s when Council demolished the north wall and
extended the sea-wall round in a curve to anchor it against the main rock outcrop, more

                   than doubling the pool’s size.
