About the Contributors:
James (Jim) Hallinan worked as a nature conservation officer at the Cape of Good Hope
Nature Reserve for ten years prior to the Reserve’s incorporation into the Table Mountain
National Park in 1998. After five years with SANParks he joined the City of Cape Town in
2003 where he served as a Senior Heritage Professional until his retirement in 2015. He has a
Masters Degree in Environmental and Geographical Science from the University of Cape
Town specialising in Environmental Interpretation. The title of his Master Degree project is:
A heritage interpretation plan for the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve (1992).

Dr Graham Avery is a retired archaeozoologist who spent his working life at the Iziko
South African Museum. He studied archaeology at the University of Cape Town and has a
Masters (1976) and PhD (1990). He has always had a keen interest in coastal archaeology. He
holds Honorary research positions in Iziko and the Archaeology Department, UCT and
undertakes palaeontological impact assessments of the Quaternary deposits in the Western
Cape.

Mike Walker graduated with a B.Comm from UCT and after a variety of jobs, including
Purser on Safmarine ships, ran his own business in the fibre-glass industry for several
decades. His family has lived in St. James since 1925. History has always been a passion and
he has authored over 20 books on Kalk Bay and Peninsula history. His other passion is golf
and he has been a life-long member of Westlake Golf Club of which he is a past-President.
