ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS
Howard Philips
Emeritus Professor Howard Phillips is a graduate of the University of Cape Town and the
University of London. He specializes in two areas, viz. the social history of medicine
(especially epidemics and pandemics, medical education and hospitals) and the history of
universities. Both fields feature prominently in what he has published and what he taught in
two of UCT’s faculties, Humanities and Health Sciences.
Off campus he applies these academic skills to oversee the publication of edited historical
texts by Historical Publications Southern Africa (formerly the Van Riebeeck Society) which
he chairs. His most recent books are In a Time of Plague: Memories of the Spanish Flu
Epidemic of 1918 in South Africa (Van Riebeeck Society, Cape Town, 2018) and UCT under
Apartheid, part 1: From Onset to Sit-in, 1948-1968 (Fanele/Jacana, Auckland Park, 2019).

Gerald Rosenthal
Dr Gerald Rosenthal is a Civil Engineer with degrees from Cape Town (1966), Imperial
College (1969) and Cambridge (1986) Universities. He has undertaken significant work in
several fields including Coastal and Geotechnical Engineering, computation and conceptual
engineering design. He is the author of two books, six technical papers published in
international journals and is particularly interested in innovative design. He holds several
patents.
Employment: Fisheries Development Corporation of SA (1967-1970); Hill Kaplan Scott and
Partners – Consulting Engineers (1970-1975); University of Cape Town – Dept of Civil
Engineering (1975 - 1990); Hill Kaplan Scott (later GIBB AFRICA) (1990 - 2000); and
Korbitec – computer systems development including Motornostix - remote condition
monitoring of rotating machinery (2000 – 2007).
He has been responsible for significant aspects of many projects including the geotechnical
and water-orientated features of Marina da Gama, Century City, Ratanga Junction Theme
Park, Mossgas Oil Refinery, and the Coega Development.
Since retiring in 2007, his main technical interests have been improving his piano playing and
delving into water-colour painting, photography, video editing and “how to improve one’s
ability to learn”.
Gerald and Heather (nee Arderne) have been married for 54 years. They live in Kenilworth
and greatly enjoy their hobbies and involvement with their family - two children and three
grandchildren.
