Carisbrooke
The house "Carisbrooke" (No. 2 Main Road) was built by Mrs Sophia Jamison in 1879.
(Fig. 4.1). She was born a Miss Hiddingh in Cape Town in 1822 and was a lady of means
(described on her death certificate as a gentlewoman). She died at 55 Grave Street, Cape
Town on 29 October 1899 aged 77 years and 6 months. She was childless. She lived at
"Carisbrooke" from 1879 to 1893 whereafter she sold the house to William Frederick
Henry Pocock on 2 February 1894. (D.T. 466).
W. H. F. Pocock was a prominent citizen in Cape Town. He came from a line of pioneer
pharmacists. His uncle J. T. Pocock (b. 1814) emigrated from England to Cape Town in
1830. By 1837 he was a registered Chemist and Druggist and ran the business J. T. Pocock
and Co. His brother Louis Greville (W. H. F.’s father) followed J. T. to South Africa and,
having passed his examinations, registered as an Apothecary, Chemist and Druggist in
1841. He set up business in George where on 16 May 1857 William was born. He was the
third member of the family to enter pharmacy and took charge of the family business after
his uncle, J. T., had died in February 1876.
William Pocock retired in 1902 when he sold the business to Heynes Matthew and Co.
Both Messrs. Heynes and Matthew began their pharmaceutical careers with J. T. Pocock
and Co. William was active in Municipal affairs and was Mayor of Rondebosch (1888) and
