1890. This occurred after the owner of "Seaforth" (Mr. Farmer) built his home nearer the
Main Road than "The Homestead" (despite agreeing not to) thereby blocking its view
across the bay to Simon’s Town. ("The Homestead" was set well back from Main Road).
In return Mr. Hablutzl, the owner of "The Homestead", built a high wall on the edge of the
common boundary cutting off some of "Seaforth's" early morning sun. Farmer went to
court to secure an order requiring Hablutzel to demolish the wall. He lost the case and
Hablutzel then increased the wall height by a further 6 feet!
Seaforth burned down circa 1939 and a new house has taken its place, but the "Wall of
Hate" still stands. So goes the tale.
Pentrich
On the Kalk Bay corner of Pentrich Road stands "Pentrich", now a home but once a
whaling station similar to "Villa Capri". The property has been owned for many years by
the Mills family. Miss Emily Mills, who lived there until the mid-1950s, hoisted the Union
Jack from a flagpole every morning. The original whale-bone fence has been replaced as
has a huge cast-iron cauldron for boiling blubber, which lay in the garden and was used for
pot plants. Embedded in the dressed stone wall on either side of the old Main Road
entrance were two inscribed stones (one of which survives). It reads:
THE DAWN OF THE MORN FOR GLORY
THE HUSH OF THE NIGHT FOR PEACE
THE GARDEN AT EVE SAYS THE STORY
GOD WALKS AND HIS SMILE BRINGS RELEASE
