Parallel with these developments trek-fishing in the traditional manner, using spotters
and seine nets and manhandling the boats on and off the beach, continued from the
beach for many decades. (Figs. 3.23 & 3.24).
The Current post-Industrial Period
Concomitant with the decline in commercial fishing Hout Bay underwent a
residential and tourist boom which redefined the Bay as a recreational rather than an
industrial space. The shrunken post-industrial fishery fits neatly into this latest phase
in the Bay’s history, its productive activity being sufficiently discrete not to intrude
on the rural-cum-tourist idyll while lending it the lustre of old world charm.
