the photograph were the shining shoes of the Duke and Duchess with Harry’s
shoes alongside. It is unknown if the Municipal photographer continued with
further work for the Municipality, but it is of note that in the Municipal accounts
for that year the cost of the Royal Reception Party was £240-4-4d compared to
the cost of road repairs for that entire year of only £227-10-0d.
At the conclusion of the Anglo-Boer War, Scowen, as Captain of the Town
Guard, which comprised about 70 men, led them at a Medals Parade in Cape
Town. Given his love of pomp and ceremony the falling-in of the Guard on the
Muizenberg Camp Ground, where the bowling green on Main Road is now
situated, can be imagined.
Town Guard Orders
B COMPANY KALK BAY - MUIZENBERG
The Company will parade (drill order) on Saturday, 24th instant, for the
regimental parade on the Grand Parade, Cape Town, when medals will be
presented to the Regiment as per Order 674, dated 19th instant. The Company
will fall in on the Camp Ground, Muizenberg, at 8 am on the 24th instant. Every
