The Auret’s of Kalk Bay – Muizenberg

                                                                          th
The Auret’s of Kalk Bay – Muizenberg derive from the 7 grandson of Jeremias Auret
of Simon’s Town. He was named Abraham, (1818-1902) and he married Elizabeth

Johanna Magdalena Gildenhuys on the 18 December 1843. (Fig. 5.2). Their seven
children (below) became part of the history of Kalk Bay, St James, Muizenberg,

                  Lakeside, Dieprivier and further afield.

Jeremias Andries: born 2 November 1844 (died in infancy)

Christina Elizabeth: born 23 June 1866 (Mrs Hurst)

They left their mark on the area in buildings, lime-burning, whaling, trek-fishing, and

                  various sea rescues.

                  Auret’s Cottage St. James

In 1850 Abraham built Auret’s Cottage. The thatched cottage and boat-shed still stand,

in somewhat modified form, on the corner of Main and St. James Road, directly
opposite the railway station. (Fig. 5.3).

The loft of the building at the back was often the overnight stop for the early peddlers,
Jewish traders who carried their goods on their backs. They would usually travel in

pairs and arriving after dark would just go upstairs to lodge for the night. Abraham

would be up early in the morning .He would go in and inform his wife that they had two
guests for breakfast, and after a hearty meal they would be on their way to the outlying

                  farms.
