Over the years Eddie had been called many things by fellow artists and critics – “a
charlatan”, “a fraud”, “a craftsman rather than an artist”, “a sham”, and “an eccentric”.
Despite this it seems that, in terms of his art, Eddie had the last laugh.
He was many things to many people: a friend, a character, generous to a fault, attention-
seeking, an ageing hippy, intelligent, and argumentative. One thing he would be glad about
is that he would never be called “ordinary”.
Thus ended a full and interesting life, and also, sadly, the era of the Kalk Bay Ladans. Late
in his life Eddie admitted to a close friend that he did have one regret: that he’d never
married and had a family.
