beach level at Clovelly. This, the only known painting, dates from 1898 but the incident
depicted – Midshipman Keppel (later Admiral Keppel RN) and colleague Waley Armitage
(arm in sling) gingerly negotiating the pass to return to their ship in Simon’s Bay – happened
