Erf 88657 is at the corner of Quarterdeck and Upper Quarterdeck Roads (today 8 Quarterdeck
Road). It was bought by William Molteno Bisset (brother of the owner of Blue Skyes across

the road) from Dr Charles Murray for £65 in 1893. Three years later he sold it to Maria

Anderson for £50. On her death in 1903 it was inherited by her husband Thomas and on his
death in 1931 by their daughter Evangeline as part of the house Quarterdeck which was next

door. In 1937 it was bought by Hugh Ross Solomon for an apparently expensive £1,260.
Solomon thus owned both erven and had paid a total of £1,610.

It seems to have been a good investment because Solomon sold both erven to Ruth Lydia

Wharton-Hood (born Goldman) the wife of Peter Wharton-Hood for a total of £2,100 four

years later in 1941. It was the Wharton-Hoods who commissioned the architects to build their
home Broadside. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find out much about this family but I

believe they are the same family prominent in insurance and financial fields. At the time the
plans were passed their address was Carmen in Dalebrook Road. Peter’s father Claude had a

longer connection with Kalk Bay and was living at his house Harrow in Dalebrook Road in

1931. It is interesting to see that, having paid £2,100 for the plots and £1,800 for the house to
be built (a total of £3,900), the property was sold three years later for £7,100 to Phillip

               Levetan.

               Nieuport

The last house in the story of the Quarterdeck area was built in 1949 and was called Nieuport
(6 Quarterdeck Road), on the site of the house Quarterdeck. It was on erf 88663, a property

that had been bought by Dr. Charles Murray in 1890. In 1893 it was transferred to John C

Molteno, and another, trading as the Hill Syndicate. It was inherited by Maria Anderson, the
daughter of Sir John Charles Molteno, and on her death in 1903 by her husband Thomas

               Johnson Anderson.

Quarterdeck was initially a seaside holiday home and rough hand drawn plans were passed in

1897 for the addition of a stoep. (Fig. 3.93.) It was a large house built of wood and iron with
