the best material obtainable. The cases dealt with at this hospital are dealt with in the portion
of the report dealing with that hospital. Fortunately there was no prevalence of any other
infectious disease at the time.
The Small Pox Hospital was not in use at the time and was set aside for coloured males,
there being accommodation for over 100 patients and in addition 5 marquees were erected. A
camp for 100 bell tents was laid out in the grounds. Fortunately these were not required for
patients, but came in useful for the isolation of 48 contacts (Lascars) from a steamer in the Bay.
The cases at this hospital are considered under the portion of the report dealing with the Small
Pox Hospital.
Besides the hospital accommodation at the City and Small Pox Hospitals, additional
temporary hospitals were installed in order to economise the work of the doctors and nurses.
These were: -
1. The Old Government House at Newlands for European patients. The patients were
placed in 16 marquees erected in the grounds. There were 276 cases admitted (138 European
males, 104 European females, 11 coloured males and 23 coloured females), with 69 deaths (33
European males, 25 European females, 2 coloured males and 3 coloured females), 33 of which
occurred within 24 hours of admission and 10 others within 48 hours.
2. Ellerslie High School, Sea Point for Europeans. Seventy patients (29 males and 41
females) were admitted, with 16 deaths (5 males and 11 females).
3. The Salvation Home in Bree Street, for coloured females. Seventy-eight patients
were admitted with 20 deaths.
4. De Villiers Street. Twenty European males, and 23 European females were
admitted, with deaths of 5 males and 2 females.
5. Twenty patients were admitted to the Alexandra Hospital: 10 of which were
transferred from Newlands House Hospital, and 1 case died.
6. Convent School at St. James. Patients admitted 13, deaths 7.
7. Baptist Mission Hall, Tramway Road, Sea Point, for coloured females. Admitted
19, died 3.
8. Many cases were admitted to the general hospitals, but these could only carry on
with the greatest difficulty because of the large percentage of the staffs affected.
