Further up are other property owners: the lessee of the Strathmore Hotel – the appropriately named
Mr Plimsoll (incorrectly spelt Plymsol), and John Adams’ farrier’s shop. On the opposite corner
of Colyn and Main Roads is another van Blerk property operating as a drapery store.
Another petition two years later vividly described Municipal workers filling in holes in the road
and ‘tinkering’, only for all the loose soil to be washed down to the Main Road in the first rains. It
is not known when the road was paved and at what cost.
Conclusion
A number of street names have proved impossible to know or guess at – the unnamed road off
Main Rd, Weston Road, Gordon and Loch/Lock roads, St John’s Rd, Prenton Road, Norman Steps,
Bertram Road, and Lever Street.
