Figs. 2.8 & 2.9: Lakeside: Zandvlei west of rail line in 1890s had extensive clear water and
was the Cape Town boating centre. Lakeside Boating Club formed in 1906 was fore-runner
of Imperial Yacht Club. The Pavilion and numerous boat-houses were focal points. Soil
eroded from the catchment caused siltation and growth of reeds that reduced usable water
surface. Both world wars interrupted sailing and IYC folded in 1946. Extensive dredging of
the main vlei 1947 - 1961 led to IYC’s revival in 1962 and new clubhouse opened in 1965.
Today: vlei west of the rail line reduced to few channels and pools, and extensive reed beds.
