Ann became a teacher by profession and, after her retirement as Principal of the
Mowbray Teachers’ Training College in 1966, she retired to Kommetjie. A keen
historian and botanist, she also took a great interest in politics and corresponded in
several languages with people in all corners of the globe. She once expressed a wish,
“Please God, I may never have to remove myself from here before the end, and leave
my heart behind”. This wish was granted – she passed away peacefully on the stoep of
her beloved family home “Lorelei” on 29 December 1996. She was 93 years old.
Conclusion
Thanks to Mike Walker, not only for inviting us to talk to you about the recently
published book “A Century of Kommetjie” but also for his support and encouragement
at a time when completion of this project, let alone publication, seemed very much like
a pipe-dream to all concerned.
