Boats have come and gone over the years in Kalk Bay, but the most significant
development in the history of the industry was the arrival in local waters of the glass fibre
vessels, most notably the high powered ski–boats and the big freezer vessels. Traditional
fishermen based in Kalk Bay have seen over the years that not only are these operators a
threat to the resource, but are also flooding the market when the snoek, yellowtail, or
geelbek are running. This leads to the lowering of fish prices. The real threat is that there
has been a huge migration of fishermen to these two sectors during the past ten years.
Conclusion
There have been many other issues over the last century that one can present, but some of
these stories remain sensitive subjects to this day. Some of these issues I will be recording
and will be locked up and presented in the next 50 years or so!
