Bay, in 1885. George Alexander was an active member of the Holy Trinity
Church and one of his projects was, in 1883, to design the Anglican Mission
School in Kalk Bay, known as Stonehaven though called ‘Die Klipskool’
by the shing community as it was built of local dressed quarry-stone. This
building, which had cost £1,560, lay opposite the Holy Trinity Church on
the sea side of Main Road. It was demolished in 1964 due to the high cost
of maintenance and is now a car park.

Alexander died at his home,
The Lephuys in Muizenberg,
at the relatively young age
of fty-two on 19 May 1904.
He was survived by his wife
and their two minor children,
Reginald and Gertrude.
Cooke, Edwin Austin
(1854-1939) Stonehaven Anglican Mission School, Kalk Bay - c.
1900
Son of Charles and Mary Cooke he was born in Maidstone, Kent, and
was educated in London. Served articles with architects A and H Lockwood,
Adelphi, London. Arrived in Cape Town in January 1899 after working
for the Public Works
Department in Tasmania for
eleven years. Immediately
set up his own practice
in Fletcher’s Chambers
Adderley Street.
Prominent work in St.
James included the design
of a home for Arthur
Townsend in St. James in
May 1903. This home was a
wooden bungalow and still
stands at No. 20 Ley Road.
In May 1905 he designed
the home known as The
Ranger, 7 Ley Road St.
James for Mr. T. Herbert.
