Commin, Kenneth (d 1960)
Commin was at one time a resident of St. James. He lived in Westray
Road and practiced from Calder’s Chambers, Main Road, Wynberg.
His main works in St. James, with Stanley Baneld as his chief assistant,
included the design of Carnoustie 46 Main Road (south corner of Rodwell
and Main Roads) for George Kinnes in 1936, the enlarging of 6-8 St. James
Road from Willliam Black’s original design of a single-storey into a double-
storey home, and the design of Skukusa, 100 Boyes Drive for Mr. Lucas.
Cowin, Norris (1875-1932) LRIBA (1912)
Norris Cowin was a resident of Muizenberg and
a Council member of the Kalk Bay-Muizenberg
Municipality. He was born at Beau Bassin
Mauritius on 7 January 1875 and served articles
with Henry Smith of Charing Cross, London.
He left England to join the newly formed City of
London Imperial Volunteers and saw action in the
Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) for fourteen months
for which he was awarded the Queen’s S A Medal,
Norris Cowin - 1906 with 3 bars.
In 1902 he joined the
Cape Town Municipality for
a few months before setting
up his own practice. His most
prominent work in St. James
was his design of a home for
Mrs. Albrechts at 44 Main
Road (north corner of Rodwell
and Main Roads).
His most prominent works
in this area were, however, the
design of the Carnegie Library,
Main Road Muizenberg (now
a Police Museum) and Liscard
House (now Wavecrest) 181
Main Road, Kalk Bay. Both
these designs have been
declared Provincial Heritage
