Cowin moved to the Transvaal in 1911 and died at his home in Mountain
View Johannesburg on 28 April 1942, aged sixty-seven. He was survived by
his wife Grace and six children, two boys (both of whom became architects)
and four daughters.
Delbridge, John (1878-1946) ARIBA (1904)
John Delbridge was born in Mossel Bay and served articles in the
ofces of Smith and Brewer in London from 1898
to 1904, after which he returned to Cape Town. He
worked in the ofce of E. Schauffelberg before
setting up his own account in chambers at Wynberg
in 1908. His practice lasted from 1908 to 1912
whereafter he entered partnership with Arthur Reid.
During the period on his own he did considerable
work at St. James with William Pocock, a former
mayor of the Kalk Bay-Muizenberg Municipality
and a local property developer. Work for Pocock
included alterations and additions to Pocock’s home
Carisbrooke, No. 2 Main Road, additions to Devon
Cottage (later Corriemar, a Provincial Heritage Site,
22 February 1991), 4 Main Road, and the design of
W. J. Delbridge - 1921
