Black’s design of
Ambleside, corner
of Hillrise and Main
Roads, was regarded
as his nest in the style
of Cape-Dutch revival
architecture. Designed The MearnV - Later rename Sorrento
for Niels Thesen in 1916
Black introduced this style in the form of two
small gabled mouldings at the front of the house as well as a central twirling
chimney, all very much the vogue of the time. It was introduced by Herbert
Baker in his redesign of the Groote Schuur, residence of Cecil Rhodes, after
the building was destroyed by re in 1896. These gables’ mouldings were
‘squared-off’ by architect Rae Ohlsson in 1939, and the chimney removed.
