His wife had passed away the previous month and he was survived by his
daughter, Marigold Tiche, and a son Richard, who was a director of LTA
Construction. The funeral was held at the Holy Trinity Church, Kalk Bay
                on Monday, 27 December.

Elsworth was a past president of the Cape Institute of Architects, a
Member of the Board of Examiners in architecture at UCT and for many

years was on the Council of the S.A. Society of Artists. In a front page
obituary of the Cape Times of 24 December 1971 he was acknowledged for
his work on the rst Table Mountain cableway and cable station, the design
of the Stellenbosch and Somerset West Town Halls and his outstanding
restoration work to old Cape Dutch buildings in Somerset West/Stellenbosch
area. He designed the Rhenish School and various municipal buildings on
the opposite side of the square. He was at the time of his death working on
the restoration of the buildings around Die Braak in Stellenbosch. Not bad
for a man aged eighty but he was passionate about architecture. His work
included the restoration of the historic home Vergelegen in Somerset West,
and the development of the property Montebello in Newlands which was
acquired by SACS School from the Michaelis family. This development by
Elsworth was regarded by many as his nest. His architecture in the Cape
which spread over fty years was one of the most signicant of all the many
architects that were involved in this part of South Africa. He was without
doubt the nest architect that lived along this coastline.

Glennie, Frederick MacIntosh (1889-1954) FRIBA (1936)

Fred Glennie was born in Cape Town and educated at Wynberg Boys
High. He served articles with Baker Masey and Kendall from 1907 to 1911
whereafter he worked as an assistant until
1914. He left the rm that year, then known as
Baker and Kendall, to set up his own practice
                which continued until 1953.

One of his rst assignments in his practice
was the design in June 1914 of two additional
classrooms and toilets for Father Duignam at
the Mission School, Star of the Sea. Further
work at Star of the Sea was done in January
1917 when he designed an infant’s room, a
laundry and a tank room for Mother Superior
(Sister Alberta). Glennie was again called in
by Father Duignam to design an additional
