South Africa in 1891 and
joined the architectural
practice of Sidney Stent
as managing assistant and
was later a partner for the
branch in Grahamstown.
He returned to Cape Town
in 1905 where he set
up his own practice. He
was a founder member
of the Cape Institute of
Architects (1902) and in
August that year replaced
Francis Masey as Honorary
Secretary and Treasurer.
He was a member of the
Cape Colony’s delegation The Ark
to the Seventh International Congress of Architects in 1906.
His only known work in Kalk Bay was his design of the home The Ark,
195 Main Road Kalk Bay in 1897, while in practice with Sidney Stent. He
designed this well known home for George Marquard Findlay.

Thomas Hitchin died a bachelor aged forty-nine on 28 July 1910, at
Rouwkoop House. It was a sad and lonely death as he had no family, left no
will and his death certicate was signed by ‘a friend’.
Hoets, Douglas (1880-1957) LRIBA (1912)
Hoets was born in Plumstead and served his articles
in George Ransome’s ofce and in 1904 went into
his own practice.
In April 1918 he designed Hamilton House
for Frank Molteno (see Chapter 14 - Homes
of St. James), and the following year designed
a home at 3 Ley Road, St. James for Theodore
Thesen known as Tilsist. In that same year he
did alterations and additions (two verandahs,
a bedroom en suite, a linen-room and servants’
