of years it was restored as
a gated village complex
by architect Mike Munnik
in 2007. He brought the
Parker and Forsyth design
of the old hotel back to its
former glory and it is now
an impressive landmark on
the Kalk Bay landscape.
Parker’s work was
varied and widespread and
extended from the great Majestic Hotel - c. 1918
design of the Majestic Hotel to the design of simple
stables, a coach house and harness-room for Mr A. Ringham, Main Road,
Kalk Bay, in June 1919. Three months before Parker’s untimely death the
partnership had designed plans for a new home for Mr J. Eddie, corner of
Gatesville and St. Johns Road, Kalk Bay (8087 July 1921).
Perry, John (1874-1943) FRIBA (1927)
John Perry was born in Dudley, Staffordshire,
England and was articled to, and later worked
for Henry Lavender in Walsall, Staffordshire.
He arrived in Cape Town in 1904, aged
thirty, and joined the rm MacGillivray and
Grant. In 1916 he was acting on his own
account and had established a rm working
relationship with Captain John Gentry, owner
of the Seahurst Hotel, and in July that year he
redesigned the frontage of the hotel with a sea-
facing lounge running the entire length of the
hotel with an entrance and ofce on the north
corner. Further work included a conservatory
at the back of the hotel, a new cottage behind
the hotel, additional rooms on the south side, John Perry - 1930
a further four bedrooms and two bed-stores.
Spencer Stanseld owner of the St. James Hotel also employed Perry
on two occasions: In March 1920 Perry designed a large extension to the
north side of the hotel along Sandhurst Road, and in 1923 designed the
