him. – The magistrate said that although defendant was not present at the time the
cigarettes were sold, and even if he had sold the business, he was still liable to be
prosecuted, as in the eyes of the law he was still the owner, having the name over
the shop and the licence in his name. He fined him 20s.
F. Dukas, fruiterer, Main Road, Muizenberg, was charged with a similar offence
and pleaded guilty. Detective Gibbs proved the charge, and defendant was fined
£2 or 7 days.

The following cases were disposed of by Mr. Jackson, CC and RM, yesterday.
Head-constable Reneke and Sergeant Merry prosecuted.
William Footman, employed at Mill’s grocery store, was summoned for leaving a
cart and horse unattended. Constable 374 stated that he saw the horse and vehicle
standing outside the shop for ten minutes without any attendant. He waited and
saw accused come out, and on asking him if he was the driver he said “yes”, and
that he had been called away to get something from the store for his master.
Fined 10s or seven days.
Leonard Volk was charged with riding a bicycle at a furious rate and knocking

down a girl on the 16 inst. The girl stated that she was coming round a corner by
Kalk Bay Station when the accused came along very fast, his feet were not in the
pedals. She tried to get out of his way but he made ………….. [press report fades

Friday, July 4 , 1902
Lena and Martha Pollis were charged before Mr. Jackson, CC and RM, with
using obscene language and singing filthy songs on the Main Road, outside the
station at Muizenberg. Chief Constable Rennick and Sergt. Merry prosecuted.
Mr. J. Long, stationmaster, gave evidence as to hearing filthy singing and
obscene expressions used by accused. Fined 10s or 14 days each.
