Thomas T Tucker Olifantsbos Olifantsbos Point The Thomas T Tucker was also known as No.30 from the 1942/11/27
Houston Shipbuilding Corporation, and was completed at
a cost of $1 833 400. She was on her maiden voyage,
carrying supplies for the North African campaign, when
she missed Cape town by 23 miles in a fog and ran
aground with no loss of life after striking Albatross Rock. It
was later alleged that she was trying to evade an enemy
submarine. The cargo was successfully salvaged by the
coaster Swazi and the Clara. The salvage of the vessel
itself, which initially looked likely, had to be abandoned
after the weather changed and she was pounded open on
the rocks, breaking into three pieces These portions of the
hull can be seen on the beach at Cape Point. It was
reported that the vessel had a 27/37 degree error in her
compass, possibly the result of the Sherman tanks on
board. Navpos gives coordinates as 34.16,35'S 18.22,87'E
