ROLL OF HONOUR 1939 - 1945
Barrie Gasson
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
th
4 verse from For the Fallen by Lawrence Binyon (1869 - 1943)
The list of those who served in the armed forces contains the names of sixteen local men
who lost their lives between 1941 - 45. They are commemorated in graves, plaques, and
rolls of honour, both at home and in the many theatres where South African forces served.
However, apart from the Roll of Honour in Holy Trinity Church Kalk Bay, containing 27
names of those who died in both world wars, none of the other local churches (St. James
Roman Catholic, Kalk Bay Methodist, and Fish Hoek Dutch Reformed Church) has any
record of these men. Fish Hoek's Battledress Roll of Honour contains two of the sixteen
names. There seems, therefore, to be no written account of who they were, where they
lived, what they did, where and how they met their deaths, and where they are buried.
The biographies presented below constitute a first step towards filling this gap in our
knowledge. They have been compiled from official records, books about the services and
related campaigns, school and university records, memories of those who served with
them, and contributions from family members and military historians. It is not yet a
comprehensive account - some of the biographies are quite short and incomplete - and
additional information, as well as corrections to what is presented here, will be welcomed.
