John Lewis’s connections with Kalk Bay were indirect. On 25 May 1940 in St. Margaret's
Church, Fish Hoek he married Dulcie Thelma Peers of Fish Hoek, whose father and
brother had excavated Peer’s Cave in the early 30s. At the time of his death his address
th
was in 5 Avenue, Fish Hoek. But his mother lived at “Retreat”, Rouxville Road, Kalk
Bay from 1938 – 50, and in Holy Trinity Church his name appears on the Roll of Honour
and on a commemorative brass plaque.
John Lewis grew up in Newlands and did his primary schooling at Bishops Prep. from
1921-26, and then enrolled at the S.A.T.S General Botha at Simon’s Town for the 1927-28
course. He was awarded the King’s Gold Medal (for the best all-round Cadet) in December
1928 and passed out from the General Botha in May 1929. He then joined the Blue Funnel
Line. In 1932 he passed his Second Mate’s ticket while with the Thesen Line. He advanced
to First Mate two years later, and attained his Master’s Ticket two years after that. In 1937
he was appointed Third Officer on the General Botha. In 1938 he left the sea and took up
