John Lewis's name and those of all his shipmates appear on the Plymouth Naval Memorial,

Devon. UK. The Memorial is situated on The Hoe which looks directly towards Plymouth

Sound. It contains the names of nearly 16 000 Commonwealth sailors who died at sea in
World War 2 and have no known graves.

Of Southern Floe only two items survived. One was the brass ship’s badge which was

found some 70 miles inland from Benghazi. It is thought that it must have floated ashore
attached to a piece of wood from the ship's bridge, and have been picked up by an enemy

souvenir hunter and later abandoned during the ebb and flow of the desert battles. Today it

is in the South African National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg. The other
item was the ship's bell, left behind when Southern Floe sailed from South Africa, which is

in the SA Naval Museum in Simon's Town.
