Hugh Crawford McCallum 19201 v
20.12.1919 - 16.4.1945
Hugh McCallum was born in Sea Point in 1919 and the family moved to Kalk Bay in 1926.
He was one of four boys, Roy, Neil and Alan. He went to school at Muizenberg High
leaving at the end of standard eight, which was not uncommon in those days. He then
joined the Cape Times as an apprentice process engraver in the Fine Printing trade. At the
outbreak of war he joined the Cape Town Highlanders, an infantry regiment, and saw
service in Abyssinia, North Africa and Italy. He was wounded in the Battle of El Alamein
and shortly thereafter his family received the following telegram:
“Regret to inform you that your son Corporal H. C. McCallum has
been wounded in action. He has sustained a penetrating wound in
the left eye, lacerated face, and right hand.”
