                  In the late 1920s – early 1930s the Nellmapius family lived at "Claddagh", 5 Dalebrook

                  Road,  Kalk  Bay.  Paul  did  his  schooling  at  Bishops  where  he  matriculated  in  1939.  He
                  entered the post-matric year in 1940 and was head boy of the school. He excelled at rugby,

                  athletics  and  shooting,  and  took  an  active  part  in  the  welfare  outreach  activities  of  the
                  school.


                  He left school in June 1940 and joined up. He was chosen for a commission and entered

                  the Cape Field Artillery seeing service in North Africa during 1942. After a spell of home

                  leave early in 1943 he returned with the CFA to Egypt in September 1943. Here the CFA
                  was  amalgamated  with  the  6th  Field  Regiment  to  form  the  1/6  Field  Regiment,  SA

                  Artillery.  After  some months  of training  they  embarked  for  Italy  arriving  in  Taranto  in

                  April 1944. Paul was by this stage Captain and the Survey Officer attached to regimental
                  headquarters. In June the regiment was advancing towards Florence and on 14 June was
