held up in the vicinity of the strategic town of Orvieto by dissected terrain, demolished

                  bridges, and intense shellfire laid down by the Germans.


                  1/6 Field Regiment was called in to unclog the advance by engaging the enemy infantry

                  and artillery. As Survey Officer, with responsibility together with the OC for directing the
                  bearings  of the  gun  batteries,  he  went forward  to  reconnoitre  the situation.  The area  he

                  entered was under fire from self-propelled 88mm guns and a shell burst from one of these
                  killed him instantly. He was buried at Bolsena War Cemetery, Plot II, Row B, Grave 7.



                  He was 24 years old, unmarried, and was survived by his father Mr. J. A. Nellmapius of
                  Rondebosch, his mother Mrs. Zoe de Smidt of “Kleintuin”, Montrose Road, Clovelly, and

                  brother Don.
