He was sent home in a hospital ship to recuperate, his family expecting to see the worst.

But they were astonished to note only a couple of marks on his face and little else

                  untoward.

After recuperation he returned in time to join his regiment, now renamed the First City /
Cape Town Highlanders, in transit to Italy. He was wounded again in Italy and spent some

time there in hospital. After his return to the regiment he was involved in the preparations
for the battle for the Gothic Line and the South African assault on Monte Sole that began

on 15 April 1945. During 16 April the Headquarters was being worried by an enemy

sniper. Hugh was detailed to investigate his whereabouts and it was while doing so that he
was killed by a shot to his head – probably by the same sniper.

Like Robin Frost, he is buried in the SA Cemetery at Castiglione dei Pepoli, Plot VI, Row
G, Grave 4. He was survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. J. K. McCallum and three

brothers of "Craig View", 5 Ladan Road, Kalk Bay.
