                  Henry Elgon Kensington-Edwardes was born in Kenya where his parents farmed coffee

                  and wattle in the Turbo Valley near Mt. Elgon. He suffered from malaria and was sent to
                  Cape  Town  where  his  maternal  grand-parents,  Mr.  and  Mrs.  C.  P.  Smuts,  lived  at

                  "Dalebrook", 30 Main Road, Kalk Bay. He went to school at Rondebosch Boys Junior and
                  High as a boarder from the age of 11 years, but he spent much of his free time at Kalk Bay.

                  His younger sister Aimee was also sent to Kalk Bay for health reasons and went to school
                  at Rustenburg.



                  He matriculated in 1933 and then studied Chemistry at UCT, after which he worked as an
                  analytical  chemist  in  fruit  research  in  Cape  Town.  When  war  broke  out  he  joined  the

                  Meteorological Section  of  the  forces  and was  posted  to  Northern  Rhodesia. After some

                  time he applied for and was accepted into the SAAF. He underwent training at Lyttleton
                  Flying School getting his “Wings” and graduating as a lieutenant at the head of his course.
