Vivian Beaumont Wake 67544 v

                  Vivian Beaumont Wake was born in Simon's Town and matriculated at SACS whereafter

                  he joined the South African Railways. In August 1914 he enlisted in the RNVR and saw
                  action as a gunner in East Africa between 1914 – 17, and was in the UK from 1917 - 19.

                  After the Armistice he returned to Cape Town


                  In 1920 he married Mona Doyle in Claremont and they had three sons. In 1939 the family

                  moved  to  Kalk  Bay,  eventually  settling  in  "Duxbury",  224  Main  Road,  Kalk  Bay.  Not
                  much is known of him during these years but Clive Wake recalls: "My father used to go

                  out with the Kalk Bay fishermen in their boats as he was a very keen fisherman. We have a

                  photo of him with a huge steenbras he caught (almost as big as himself)".


                  In June 1940 Vivian Wake enlisted again, as an Able Seaman in the SDF. He served in a
                  variety  of  merchant  ships  in  the  Atlantic,  Middle  and  Far  East.  His  last  ship  was  the

                  Bandar Shahpoor and it was while serving with her in the Persian Gulf that he fell ill. He
