Alfred John Seymour 16393 v

Alfred Seymour was a well-known and popular sportsman. He played soccer for Wynberg
and Peninsula in the first league, rugby for False Bay R. F. C., and baseball for the old
Wanderers Club. He was also a member of the False Bay Swimming Club that was based
in Kalk Bay.
He joined up soon after war started and saw action in Abyssinia where he was badly shell-
shocked. He returned to South Africa and spent a year recuperating in the Seahurst
Auxiliary Military Hospital. Later he went north again with 4/22 Field Regiment SA
Artillery in the SA Sixth Division, with the rank of Bombardier, and saw action in North
Africa and Italy,
On 12 July 1945, two months after war had ended in Europe, he was returning to South
Africa by air on the shuttle service operated by the SAAF between Cairo and Pretoria. The
