Frank Scrimgeour was the eldest of the three sons of Professor and Mrs. Alexander Carr-
Scott Scrimgeour. He initially went to school at Wynberg but spent his last four years at
Rondebosch Boys High where he matriculated in 1936. He was described in the R.B.H.S.
Newsletter as "of pleasant and cheerful temper, direct and straightforward in manner, with
a rare kind of humour revealed in unusual questions and answers volunteered in the
classroom". He was a keen sportsman excelling at rugby and cricket, and was an expert
diver. After leaving school he joined the Provincial Insurance Company and at the start of
war was a part-time student in the Department of Music at UCT.

After joining up he first saw service with Coastal Defence and then joined the 1 Anti-
Aircraft Regiment early in 1941, reaching the rank of Sergeant. He was posted to Libya
where he arrived on 25 November 1941, just after the First Battle of Sidi Rezeg in which
