Figs. 2.43 & 2.44: Kalk Bay Pool, c. 1903, (RRW). Natural gulley known as Bishop’s Pool
because Bishop Gray bathed here in the 1860s when he had a holiday house in Kalk Bay –
now the site of the HTC Rectory. Formalised into a tidal pool in 1913 by the KB-MM;
adjoining pool formalised by City Council in 1922. Largest pools on False Bay coast and
were popular recreational and competition venues from 1920s – 60s. Today hemmed in and
cut-off from adjoining spaces and beach areas by Brass Bell’s annexations of same.
